Question: You joined Beacon as a Project Engineer back in early 2018. Has anything surprised you about working in this industry, particularly when it comes to Surety Claims or Construction Consulting projects?
Myat: What surprised me when I first started at Beacon was learning how big the Surety Industry is. The Surety Industry market size is something like $16 billion. Before working as a construction/surety claims consultant, I had previously associated the industry only with bonds, insurances, and underwriting. I have learned that the Surety industry is a diverse and growing industry intersecting with Legal, Real Estate, Construction, Finance, and Consulting.
Question: What areas of your job do you enjoy the most? (for example, what types of projects?)
Myat: What I enjoy most about working as a surety/construction consultant is the opportunity to work with different people from different career backgrounds. I’ve had the opportunity to work with amazing clients, attorneys, developers, public sector construction personnel, and general contractors. Through these experiences, I was able to learn a lot about the industry and gain insights which are invaluable for my personal and professional growth.
Question: You have been living in the New York City area for close to 10 years now. What is your favorite part of living in NYC?
Myat: I came to New York from Myanmar in 2013 for my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and I am lucky to be able work and live in this amazing city after graduation. I love the energy New York city gives and how diverse, inclusive and interesting people are. I am also a big foodie so, it’s wonderful to be in a city that houses restaurants with several Michelin stars and James Beard award nominations.
Question: Do you have any hobbies or interests that you like to pursue in your free time?
Myat: I love going to the Union Square farmers’ market on the weekend as it has plants, fresh baked pastries, and farm fresh produce from Long Island, the Hudson valley, and upstate New York. I enjoy trying out new restaurants and bakeries across all boroughs. I’ve recently been making a habit to take nature walks on weekends as I learn how mentally draining it was to be stuck inside my apartment during the Pandemic. Luckily, I live 8 minutes away from Prospect Park and guaranteed dog sightings are always a plus.
