Beacon Staff Profile: Josue Rivas Bermudez, Project Engineer & Surety Consultant

Josue Rivas Bermudez is the newest member of Beacon's construction consulting team. Based out of Beacon's Fort Lauderdale, Florida office, Josue holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has extensive experience working on major construction and engineering projects around the world. Having worked in the oil and gas industry for a number of years, Josue has worked in several different countries—traveling and living wherever the job took him. Along the way, Josue developed his foreign language skills. He can now communicate in four languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian).

At Beacon, Josue is using his knowledge of construction project management and engineering to help provide our clients with outstanding service on a wide range of construction consulting assignments. Here is more about Josue:

Question: You have worked as an engineer on many international projects. What are some of the countries you have worked in?

Josue: In addition to working in the U.S., I have worked in Venezuela, Argentina, Angola, Suriname, and Brazil. I have also lived in Canada and India, but never worked in those countries.

Question: Is there a particular country that you enjoyed working in or visiting the most?

Josue: Angola, a country located on the west coast of Southern Africa, was a country I really enjoyed a lot. I learned a lot about the African culture. People are genuine and they really know how to live their life in the moment. It's also a very beautiful country, especially the beaches. Suriname, in South America, was the last country I lived and worked in before moving to the U.S. Suriname has the most beautiful forest I have ever seen. It felt like being in the Avatar movie, amazing nature, animals, and natural scenery like I had never seen before in my life.

Question: You seem to have a great knack for learning languages (with the ability to speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian). Can you give any tips for other people who want to learn another language?

Josue: Once you learn a second language, learning the next language becomes easier. Living the language is the fastest way to learn a language. If you don’t have the chance to be in the country where the language is spoken, surround yourself in the language and culture. Listen to music, news, meet people who speak the language, and watch tv, movies, etc in that language. For example, I have never lived in Italy, but I was able to learn Italian by studying the language, and watching movies, TV, etc. Thanks to this language skill and my engineering experience, an Italian company invited me to work with them in Angola.

Question: Do you have any hobbies or personal interests that you pursue during your free time?

Josue: I really enjoy swimming in the ocean and freediving, but in general swimming, calisthenics/working out, and climbing are my main hobbies.
