Beacon Staff Profile: Anabella Vivas, Northeastern University Engineering Co-op
Anabella Vivas joined Beacon recently for a 6-month internship as part of Northeastern University's Co-op (Cooperative Education) program. Anabella, who is working out of Beacon's Medford, MA office, is learning on the job as she assists Beacon's Project Managers and Project Engineers on a wide variety of construction consulting assignments.
We caught up with Anabella this week to learn more about her and the Northeastern University Co-op program.
What is your major at Northeastern and when will you graduate?
I’m a dual major, Civil Engineering and Computer Science, with a minor in Mathematics. I’m in my 2nd year at Northeastern and will graduate in May of 2026.
How did you become interested in studying engineering?
From a young age, my father exposed me to his work in residential construction. This ignited my interest in Civil Engineering, which deepened as I became more involved in my family’s business, working alongside engineers. Recognizing the importance of expanding my skill set, I decided to pursue a dual major (Civil Engineering and Computer Science).
Northeastern University is famous for its Co-op program. Is that part of what interested you in going to school there?
The Co-op program was a big factor when deciding where to attend school. It has provided me with an opportunity to gain real-world experience, apply classroom learning to a practical setting, and build a strong professional network which I hope will prove useful in the future when I graduate.
How do you like going to school in Boston?
Living and studying in Boston has been an amazing experience, as you’re always surrounded by smart and motivated students, beautiful architecture, and a rich culture. There’s great food everywhere, and there are many places to visit in the city and in nearby towns, which means you’ll never get bored. The winters are a little hard, but everything else the city has to offer makes up for it!
What do you like to do in your free time?
When not working or studying, I love to run. I did my first half-marathon in November of last year, and I’m currently training for another one in May. My friends and I are also big runners and foodies, so we like to discover new running routes around Boston and try new bakeries or restaurants afterwards.
Where did you grow up before moving to Boston to study at Northeastern University?
I'm originally from Venezuela but have been living in Costa Rica for the past 12 years prior to starting college.
Welcome Anabella!
