More about Van Cortlandt Park:
Van Cortlandt Park has a rich history. It is New York City's third largest park, with more than 1100 acres spread across the ridges and valleys of "The Bronx"—New York City's northwest borough, which is often considered NYC's "greenest" borough, because parkland accounts for 24% of its land area.
Many people don't realize that such a beautiful and expansive public park exists in the Bronx. Playing fields and playgrounds are scattered around the park's edges, surrounding more than 600 acres of forest. In the park's rich forest can be found stands of black walnut, oak, tuliptrees, American sycamore, and American elm, along with sugar maple, a tree usually native to New England. The park is also home to the oldest house in the Bronx and the borough's largest freshwater lake.
The Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course opened on July 6, 1895, making it the first and oldest public municipal golf course in the United States. The nearby Mosholu Golf Course opened in 1914 and is regarded to be one of the best-maintained public courses in New York State. Besides golf, the many other sports and activities taking place in Van Cortlandt Park include baseball, basketball, cricket, football, horseback riding, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and track and field.
Established by the City of New York in 1889, Van Cortlandt Park is named after the Van Cortlandt family. The tract of land where the park now exists was purchased by Jacobus Van Cortlandt in 1694. In 1747, Frederick Van Cortlandt, son of Jacobus Van Cortlandt, constructed a house on the property, calling it the Van Cortlandt House. After the park's establishment, the house was transformed into a museum, now known as the Van Cortlandt House Museum—a name it retains to this day.
Jacobus Van Cortlandt was a merchant and served in many governmental positions, including several judgeships in New York City. He was also mayor of New York City for two terms: 1710-1711 and 1719-1720. Jacobus Van Cortlandt's grandson, John Jay, became one of the founding fathers of the U.S. He was the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and also became the first Secretary of State, serving under George Washington. Later, he became Governor of New York State.
