Beacon Project Update: MBTA Wachusett Rail Station
Opens for Commuter Train Service on September 30th

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced the opening of its new Wachusett commuter rail station, with limited commuter service starting on Friday, September 30th. MBTA currently projects that the station will be ready for a full train service schedule later this Fall. Meanwhile, other construction related to the new station is ongoing.

Beacon Consulting Group, Inc. has been providing Surety Consulting / Construction Consulting Services on the project, helping to ensure that the work continues to proceed in a timely manner. Because of early project delays, Beacon was retained by the Surety to assist with project management and cost oversight, and to help move the project forward (Click Here for more info).

According to MBTA, the goals of this commuter rail extension project include:

  • Improve mass transit options to communities west of Fitchburg, MA
  • Reduce the commute time from the region to the Boston area job market
  • Increase the supply of commuter rail parking for riders in the western part of the region
  • Improve operation & capacity of the Fitchburg Rail Line train Layover Facility

The Wachusett Station project is part of a larger improvement project on the line, which includes the new Westminster (MA) Layover Facility, and upgrades to the existing rail line to accommodate the extend commuter rail service 4 miles west from Fitchburg to Wachusett.
